Large Format Dinners in Philadelphia

The holiday season is coming up. I’d like to share the large format dinners my family and friends had enjoyed at Amada and at Zahav over the past few months to help you and yours plan for a wonderful experience.

Amada owned by Iron Chef Jose Garces

Conchinillo Asado or suckling pig is served as a celebratory dish and has its roots in the Spanish tradition. In Philadelphia, only Amada will prepare this for you with a three day advance notice.

The dish is available either as a whole pig or half a pig. Each half is good for four to six people. The conchinillo asado will be carved table side.

The dish comes with a variety of greens, beans and roasted fingerling potatoes. We ordered a large paella as well.

The paella is not part of the conchinillo asado order. We just wanted an additional dish to complement the suckling pig.

Verdict: We loved the presentation and the flavors. Our family was seated in the private dining room. Amada makes your dinner special. The chef also sent out some complimentary appetizers.

Zahav owned by Chef Mike Solomonov

James Beard Award Winner for Best chef

Zahav is Philadelphia’s top restaurant to take out of town guests. The food is great. The location is posh. It’s difficult to snag a reservation during prime dinner hours. It’s one of the first fine dinning establishments serving Modern Israeli cuisine. It’s the best place to impress your friends.

We were entertaining guests from London and Tokyo so we decided to order the Mesibah, the party time menu. To start, hummus with laffa was served. Then, came the mezze of assorted vegetables in mediterranean spices. We weren’t able to take photos of the mezze because everyone was busy enjoying the new exciting flavors.

The main course was the lamb shoulder with pomegranate and chickpeas. The lamb was so moist and the dish came with flavor rice which just heightened the flavors.

I think the best part for me was the dessert portion. Since there were five of us, we got to taste all five dessert offerings on the menu. Clockwise from top left: Sachleb Semifreddo, Coffee Custard, Pistachio Tart, Olive Oil Cake and Baklava.

One of my favorites: Pistachio Tart.

My other favorite: Coffee Custard.

Verdict: Zahav is our go to restaurant. I think this is the best restaurant in Philadelphia in terms of quality and value. We’re going again in November. A friend from FL is visiting.
