Dinner @ Xochitl, Philadelphia

Xochitl, Philadelphia
I heard about the innovative Mexican cuisine at Xochitl in South Philly so I decided to bring one of the Indian rotation team members at work to check it out.

To start, the requisite margarita. She had never tasted tequilla before. It’s only right to start her down this evil path.

We then ordered different plates to share.

1.  Short Rib Tamale - masa tamal, shredded short rib, house crema in a pasilla chile gravy finished with pickled onion Mushroom Tamale.  Verdict: Considering this is short rib, it came from a lean cow. It didn’t have the melt in your mouth taste. And, the tamale was dry.

2.  Huarache de Hongos – crispy masa flatbread, seared wild mushrooms, marinated artichokes topped with manchego and cotija cheese.  Verdict: It’s ok. I had better.

3.  Chicken Tacos – house made tortillas, ancho braised chicken, crema avocado, cotija, pickled onion.  Verdict: I think this is the best dish I tasted. The creamy avocado is balanced by the pickled onion. And, the chicken was moist.

4.  Steak Tacos – house made tortillas seared skirt steak, refritos, tomato escabeche, crispy shallots.  Verdict: The steak was well seasoned but dry. This restaurant has to choose fattier cuts of beef.

Overall: Go for the drinks, skip the meal.
